How We Saved a Naples Restaurant $60K—and Fixed Dangerous Coverage Gaps

By July 31, 2025Insurance

A fine dining restaurant in Naples came to us for a second opinion on their insurance. What we uncovered wasn’t just room for savings—it was a policy full of exclusions that would’ve denied them coverage for many real-life scenarios. After restructuring their insurance program, we saved them over $60,000 annually and secured meaningful protection that actually matches how they operate.

The Review:

  • The restaurant had multiple policies that looked fine on paper—but under the surface, they were packed with exclusions and hidden traps.

  • Their Liquor Liability coverage included strict warranties that required every alcohol-serving employee to be TIPS certified. If just one bartender wasn’t current, the carrier could deny a liquor-related claim altogether.

  • The Assault & Battery (A&B) coverage was severely limited. They were paying $19,549 annually for this policy—but it only offered $300,000 per incident with legal fees included in that limit.

  • Worse, a Firearm and Weapon Exclusion nullified most real-world A&B scenarios. According to the language, any object used as a weapon—whether intended as one or not—voided coverage. That includes beer bottles, wine bottles, chairs, or even kitchen utensis.

Here’s What That Means:

  • The policy only truly covered fistfights. If an object was involved—which is common in serious A&B claims—coverage would be denied.

  • Essentially, the restaurant was paying nearly $20K for A&B coverage that wouldn’t respond in the most likely and severe situations.

Other Red Flags We Found:

  1. Flood Coverage listed wrong locations.

  2. Liquor Liability Limits Were Inadequate:

  3. Property Limits Were Outdated:

  4. No Cyber or EPLI Coverage:

The Fix:

  • We consolidated their Property, GL, Flood, and Liquor Liability with a hospitality-focused carrier.

  • Increased liquor limits and secured A&B coverage with broader definitions and defense costs outside limits.

  • Eliminated or minimized harmful exclusions tied to performers, weapons, dancing, and employee procedures.

  • Reviewed and aligned their internal SOPs to meet carrier requirements and avoid breach-based denials.

Result?

  • $60,000+ in annual premium savings

  • Real coverage that matches real operations

  • Peace of mind with no guesswork

Why It Matters:

  • This is why a knowledgeable insurance partner matters. If your agent isn’t reading the exclusions, you could be paying for coverage that vanishes when you need it most.
